Exploring Oslo

Hello, world! We had a great day exploring the city yesterday. I thought I’d post some pictures (finally) while I sit here battling jet lag.

A reflective art piece in the lobby of the Clarion Hub Hotel.

Flowers, flowers everywhere.

Some images from our gorgeous hotel. The video is a screen inside the elevators that keeps playing these mesmerizing backdrops.

One of a plethora of unique food stalls that fill the Oslo Street Food building.

This stall in particular sold several highly elaborate, Instagram-ready waffle cone dessert creations.
An extraterrestrial take on my dad’s all-time favorite painting.
There have been many times in my life when I’ve regretted that my allergies prevent me from being able to enjoy ceviche. This was one of them.
This weathered Coca-Cola mural is actually just the gate that stores the drink options for sale at one of the street food vendors.

As we ventured out, we stumbled upon Oslo Street Food, which is very similar to places like Union Market in D.C. or Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis, for those of you familiar with those spots. We circled back here for some delicious dinner, where Mom tried butter chicken for the first time. The verdict: marvelous.

The threshold of Tim Wendelboe’s unassuming coffee bar.
I opted for their cappuccino freddo, at the barista’s recommendation. The drink, served cold, possessed a heavenly, cloud-like texture that was a triumph in itself.
Here I am working up the courage to introduce myself as a barista from the United States. All three of the shop’s baristas were consummately professional and very kind.

We then stopped over to Tim Wendelboe’s coffee bar, where champion-level baristas prepare specialty drinks that change on a daily basis. (You can see the roll of paper that serves as their menu behind the counter.) As a member of the industry and a lover of all things specialty coffee, I was utterly entranced by this experience. I wanted to jump behind the bar and ask a million questions. I am so glad I got to see this while here.

While my parents took a little time to recuperate, I wandered around on my own for a little bit. I stumbled upon SALT, which is described as a “nomadic art project” that is meant to inspire conversation about our responsibilities as guardians of the planet and the oceans. The structure itself was pretty breathtaking, and it looks across the water to the famous Opera House, of which I should have some more photos later.

And here’s me attempting to be artsy with a Norwegian flag flying on a boat near the SALT installation.

The good news? We’ve elected to extend our stay in Oslo by a day so that we can explore a little more before we have to head out. I think between the jet lag and the considerable amount of walking, we haven’t quite gotten to do everything we hoped for yet.

Se dere snart!
